Sensor Components

To interact with your sensor, you'll need to know where the magnet icon and LED are located on the casing. Check out the graphic πŸ‘‡

Pretty straightforward, huh?!

Magnet Icon

A magnet is used to turn the sensor on and off, and also to reset it. When we say hold the magnet over the magnet icon, this is the spot we mean!

LED

You'll be looking for light cues and patterns from the LED to know whether you've turned the sensor on or off. Here is where you'll find the LED.

Turning On Your Sensor 🟒

Before we go through the process of turning on the sensor, just a reminder that it’s best practice to have your sensor assigned to a container within Asset Management on the platform you can also do this on the app Wastehero installation.

Okay, ready? Let's go! πŸ™Œ

Hold the magnet over the magnet icon on the sensor until you can see that the LED starts blinking green. At this point, you can take the magnet away. The LED will perform green blinks.

The sensor will now perform a measurement, identify the network conditions, and retrieve its configuration over the internet. This can take between 20 and 200 seconds. During this time, the LED will show fast, green blinks that resemble a heartbeat.

If turning the sensor on has been successful, the LED will show a steady green light for 5 seconds, followed by green blinks to indicate the received signal strength. Anything over 4 blinks is considered a good signal strength. When you see this light pattern, the sensor has been successfully turned to ON mode.

You’ll now be able to view the measurement the sensor has taken on the WasteHero Platform. The sensor will now follow the measurement schedule settings that have been configured for this container/sensor relationship.

Note: The sensor will take a measurement every time you turn it on.

In the event that the sensor has been unsuccessful in turning on, the LED will blink red, then go to OFF mode. In this case, just try turning on your sensor again with the same procedure. Check out troubleshooting for more.

Turning Off Your Sensor πŸ”΄

Now we’ll take a look at how to turn off your sensor.

To turn off your sensor, hold the magnet over the magnet icon until you see a red blink. The LED will blink in red to indicate the sensor has turned off.

Verify Current Mode (aka: is your sensor on or off?!) πŸŸ’πŸ”΄

Is my sensor currently on or off??

Good question - and the answer is an easy one.

Quickly tap a magnet over the magnet icon. Don't hold the magnet on the sensor - it needs to be a quick, half-a-second tap!

If the LED gives a quick green flash, your sensor is ON 🟒

If the LED gives a quick red flash, your sensor is OFF πŸ”΄

Resetting Your Sensor

To reset your sensor, simply follow the procedures above to turn it off and back on again.

When will I need to reset my sensor?

You'll need to reset your sensor to force a fill-level measurement or to immediately configure the sensor to a new measurement schedule.

Be aware that your sensor automatically updates its software. This means that if your smart bin sensor suddenly is flashing or something similar by itself, this can mean that it is updating the software.

Light Pattern Table

Table for sensor firmware version 1.0.5, 1.0.6
Mode of the deviceMagnet applied for less than 1 secondMagnet applied for more than 2 secondsMode activity
OFFVerify mode 1 Short RED blink (DOES NOT change mode)Turn ON 5 GREEN blink (Goes to FIRST CONNECT MODE)None
ONVerify mode 1 Short GREEN blink (DOES NOT change mode)Turn OFF 5 RED blinks (Goes to OFF)Transmits measurements by schedule.
FIRST CONNECT MODEN/AN/AGREEN short blinks (heart beat) while the sensor will try to connect – this takes 20-200 seconds. On success it will show GREEN light for 5 seconds, followed by 1-10 GREEN blinks to indicate RSSI level (over 4 is good) - then go to ON. If failure it will show RED blinks 20 times - then go to OFF..

Table for sensor firmware version 2.1.0+
Mode of the deviceMagnet applied for less than 1 secondMagnet applied for more than 2 secondsMode activity
OFFVerify mode 1 Short RED blink (DOES NOT change mode)Turn ON: 3 GREEN slow blinks plus 8 GREEN quick blinks (Goes to FIRST CONNECT MODE)None
ONVerify mode 1 Short GREEN blinks (DOES NOT change mode)Turn OFF 8 plus 3 RED blinks (Goes to OFF)Will wake up by real-time clock (RTC) based on the configured measurement/transmit schedule.
UpdateN/AN/AUpdate firmware. ORANGE toggle while updating – can occur after a scheduled wakeup once the transmission is made. On success it will show GREEN light for 3 seconds, followed by 1-4 GREEN blinks to indicate RSSI level (over 4 is excellent) - then go to ON.
FIRST CONNECT MODEN/AN/AGREEN short blinks (heart beat) while the sensor will try to cennect, this takes 20-200 seconds. During registration, it is 2 GREEN quick blinks during transmission, it is 3 GREEN quick blinks. On success it will show GREEN light for 3 seconds, followed by 1-4 GREEN blinks to indicate RSSI level (over 4 is excellent) then go to ON. If failed it will show RED light for 3 seconds followed by 2-5 RED blinks to indicate

Troubleshooting

Q: My sensor is blinking green to start the turn on procedure, but it fails and turns back off. What should I do?

A: Try at least five times to turn on your sensor. The battery may need a little waking up after resting for a while πŸ₯± If the turn on procedure still isn't successful, rest the magnet on the sensor for 15 minutes, then try again.

Still won't turn on? It could be poor network connectivity. Try going outside or to a different location. You may need to purchase an additional external antenna from the WasteHero Hardware Marketplace if you have poor network connection.

If you're still having troubles, reach out to WasteHero Customer Support via the live chat.

Q: My sensor is not reacting to the magnet. What should I do?

A: Try to use a more powerful magnet to interact with your sensor. If that doesn't work, simply wait 5-10 minutes and try again. If the sensor still isn't reacting with a strong magnet, it could be faulty. Reach out to WasteHero Customer Support via the live chat..

Congrats, you're now a pro at interacting with your Smart Bin Sensor! πŸ₯³
